Bill Gates: The next outbreak? We’re not ready

Bill Gates (2015): Če bo v naslednjih desetletjih kaj ubilo več kot 10 milijonov ljudi, to ne bo vojna, ampak zelo kužen virus. … Nismo pripravljeni na naslednjo epidemijo. Gates:

There’s no need to panic … but we need to get going”, to put all our good ideas into practice, from scenario planning to vaccine research to health worker training in order to be ready for the next outbreak. We’ve actually invested very little in a system to stop future epidemics. Actually, things got a lot worse. In the past few years, a ton of funding toward disease security programs was slashed.

Now, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have paid for 15,000 medicinal molecules to be shipped to a leading laboratory in Belgium to be tested as a potential cure to the coronavirus. The biosafety laboratory in Leuven is one of the few facilities in the world able to test thousands of molecules at high speed. We do not expect a miracle cure but that any sign of inhibition of the Covid-19 disease would be considered a significant breakthrough. Prof Johan Neyts said: “A bit is also good. Or even better: a few substances that inhibit a little, and which we can then combine.”
