Wow, this is big : Zelensky holds ‘meaningful’ call with Xi Jinping, where they agreed that “China would send a special representative to Ukraine to hold talks with all parties on resolving the ‘crisis'”.
washingtonpost.com/world/2023/04/…Chinese readout of the call, translated by @ZichenWanghere ⬇️
Interesting points:
1) Xi said that “mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is the political basis of China-Ukraine relations”. No need to explain why that’s huge…
2) Reference to the US?: “China is not the author of the crisis in Ukraine, nor is it a party to it. [China is a] responsible big country, we will neither watch the fire from across the river nor pour oil on the fire, nor will we take advantage of the opportunity to make profits”
And of course,
3) Xi insisted that “dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way out”, that “there is no winner in a nuclear war” and that “now that rational thinking and voices are increasing [I wonder who that refers to?], all parties should seize the opportunity to…
…accumulate favorable conditions for a political solution to the crisis.”
He added that “China will insist on urging peace and promoting talks, and make its own efforts to stop the war and ceasefire and restore peace as soon as possible” by sending “its Special…
…Representative for Eurasian Affairs to Ukraine and other countries for in-depth communication with all parties on the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.”
Zelensky seemed quite positive about the call ⬇️ Now let’s see what actually materializes out of this…
