Fantazija kapitalizma brez ljudi

“They have still never seen the app. They were working tech support for the app and had never seen the app,” the person said of the party’s support staffers. They said that those who had been trained to provide support arrived before noon and “it became very apparent very fast how the app was an unmitigated disaster,” they said. “They were getting calls from people saying they couldn’t download the app.” Some of the problems, the person said, were simply precinct chairs less comfortable with technology, but they were also getting reports that the app was buggy.

A few thoughts about the Iowa Caucuses: what we are seeing there is part of a larger shift, the same thing that happened with the Boeing 737 max, the MiDAS software that wrongly kicked 20k people off of unemployment in Michigan.

We are seeing over and over the replacement of people who know how organizations, bureaucracies and systems function with poorly designed and specified “apps” that continually fail. The problem is not really the technology, but the idea that local institutional knowledge and labor can be easily replaced with consultants who look at a process as a snap shot in time.

This is part of a larger conflict between bosses and labor, in which the bosses have deluded themselves into thinking that they can go it alone without the workers who are constantly fixing, patching and maintaining these complex systems.

This fantasy of capitalism without labor will only continue to produce these disasters.

PS: this is happening in nearly every industry and institution, rapidly hollowing them out. You see it everywhere.
