The threat has shifted. While Europeans breathed a sigh of relief at US President Donald Trump’s recent retreat on Greenland, Canada has now become the target. The US administration has set its sights on the province of Alberta, an energy hub in western Canada that accounts for 90% of national oil production. “Alberta is a natural partner for the US,” declared Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on January 22 during his visit to Davos, Switzerland, as if referring to a fully sovereign state. Notably, he was responding to MAGA influencer Jack Posobiec, a prominent Christian nationalist. “People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got,” Bessent noted.
Bessent was referring to a campaign launched at the start of January to collect nearly 178,000 signatures in the province, aiming to organize a referendum on independence, asking the question: “Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?” The initiative, led by the separatist Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), has little chance of resulting in the province’s actual secession, according to polls.
Although this movement has deep roots, it remains very much a minority. Its motivations are well understood. The issue is not a desire to join the US, but rather the frustration of a wealthy province that feels unheard in federal decision-making and believes it pays disproportionately for the rest of the country. The province is currently struggling, as its heavy oil production lacks viable markets.
…
Political contacts with Alberta officials have intensified in recent months. Danielle Smith, the province’s conservative premier and a former radio host, authorized the petition by changing the rules without first verifying the constitutionality of the question. She maintains close ties with the Trumpist sphere, refusing to openly criticize the US president, unlike other elected officials in her country. In January 2025, she met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, just days before his return to the White House. In November, Cameron Davies, leader of the Republican Party of Alberta, traveled to the US, where he met with MAGA stars Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly.
This convergence has reached a new level in recent weeks, particularly on Steve Bannon’s show. The ideological guardian of the MAGA movement and former Trump adviser has frequently discussed Canada on his podcast The War Room. He has emphasized that the country falls within the “vital national security interests of the United States” but was becoming increasingly hostile. “Canada is rapidly changing,” he said, noting that “25% of Canada’s population is foreign-born.”
His main concern is the Arctic’s vulnerability to Chinese influence and operations. Canada “could be the next Ukraine,” he claimed, invoking the territorial ambitions it provokes. In his view, Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister who signed a trade deal with Beijing as part of Canada’s diversification strategy, is a “globalist” guilty of appeasing the Chinese Communist Party. On his social network, Truth Social, Trump also asserted on Friday that China will “devour” Canada in less than a year.
Steve Bannon:
