Arla has ended the Bovaer trial in the UK, just after massive problems appeared in Denmark. But what bovine stupidity led to Bovaer being introduced in the first place? 

Bovaer is a product of the Net Zero cult that has seen UK FIRES call for beef and lamb to eliminated by 2050. Of course they want to reduce methane emissions as well as CO2. 

The CCC have been less draconian. They want meat consumption to fall 35% by 2050 compared to 2019 and a 38% cut in the number of cattle and sheep, despite acknowledging methane emissions are already 62% lower than 1990 levels.

But the whole idea of cutting methane emissions from ruminant livestock is mistaken because of the cattle-grazing cycle, which sees CH4 oxidising to CO2 which is absorbed by grass during photosynthesis and eaten by cattle again.

It’s not as if Bovaer is particularly effective. Yes, it reduces emissions by ~33%, but milk yields fall by a similar amount, meaning more cows are required for the same output and very similar total emissions. Bovine stupidity.

The safety data sheet shows Bovaer causes serious eye damage, skin irritation and is suspected of damaging fertility. Not quite as “totally safe” as the manufacturers would have us believe. 

The Danish experience has showed that Bovaer can cause serious health issues in cows with reports of milk fever and diarrhoea, udder problems, fertility issues and some reports of cows collapsing and dying. Cows recover when Bovaer is removed.

The mad rush to Net Zero has caused an outbreak of bovine stupidity amongst our ruling classes. Bovaer is a dangerous and ineffective “solution” to a non-existent problem. We can only hope Arla does the right thing and doesn’t extend the trial.
