It’s blatantly obvious at this point that the only way to stop Israel from completely wiping out the Palestinians is a UN-sanctioned international peacekeeping force to shield them from the IDF and provide desperately needed aid. While it is true that only the UN Security Council could legally authorise such a mission, and the US veto makes that practically impossible, the 1950 “Uniting for Peace” resolution states that in any cases where the Security Council is deadlocked by a veto and cannot fulfil its responsibility to maintain peace, the UN General Assembly, with a two-thirds majority, may issue recommendations for collective measures, including the use of armed force. While an endorsement by the UN General Assembly would not render such a mission “legal” under international law — and besides, Israel has exposed the fiction that “international law” actually exists — it would nonetheless confer it significant political legitimacy and moral authority. If UN representatives are serious about stopping this, why aren’t they discussing such an option?
